A Modified Technique for the Pathologic Approach to the Investigation of Early Gastric Cancer and Chronic Gastritis

Abstract
Among various histopathologic approaches for the investigation of gastric mucosal lesions the reconstruction method has been widely used with its advantages of expressing qualitative as well as quantitative characteristics, and also greatly contributed to the correlation of endoscopic and radiologic features to the macroscopic findings of the resected stomach.
However, the method was found to be not easily applicable routinely in the general hospital pathology laboratory level as expected because of its complicated and time-consuming procedure. The authors herein propose a modified technique of reconstruction method which is more simple and accurately manageable not only in illustrating the histo-topographic informations on the concerned lesion but also providing the details of the associated chronic gastritis even by inexperienced pathologists and gastroenterologists. The major modification derives from preparing a reconstruction-paper with lines of longitude and latitude on which the outline of a given gastric mucosal lesion is drawn with or without assistance of transparent acetate paper it replaces the frequent photography during the procedure, and cutting process is simple enough to follow the lines of the paper with wide: flexibility, so that an accurate image is, easily transferred to the original endoscopic and radiologic features. This modified technique also has an advantage of skipping certain procedures intentionally according to the investigative scope, and can be applied more precisely to a quantitative analysis of gastritic process with expansion of reconstruction scale.
